The Waterford – Cuvée Koffi
March 22, 2024 | article | 5 minute read

Natural flavour, unearthed farm by farm, then layered for the most complex single malt experience

How do you assemble the world’s most profound natural whisky possible? This Spring, with the introduction of The Waterford – Cuvée Koffi, we attempt to answer that very question.

24 distinct Single Farm Origins, each revelling in its own distinct terroir-derived flavour, augmented by four distinct cask types across a world-leading cask profile of Good Wood, layered into our most complex Cuvée Concept like the greatest wines of Champagne and Bordeaux, and with total traceability and transparency from field to barrel.

This whisky layers some of our earliest Single Farm Origins, each of which is over six years old. It is the apogee of our range, our new flagship single malt, our oldest and most complex possible whisky – our lodestar.

Layering for ultimate complexity

As with all of our whiskies The Waterford begins with the barley. Separately harvested from 24 Irish Single Farm Origins. Individually malted, fermented, distilled and matured before selection and assemblage by Head Distiller Ned.

Tasting through each Single Farm Origin across four distinct cask types – First Fill and Virgin American Oak, Premium French Oak and Vin Doux Naturels – Ned gradually assembled The Waterford, before marrying the components for an additional six months for harmony prior to bottling.

Its wide spectrum of flavour conjures our classic character of artisanal bakery aromas and an indulgent mouthfeel, whilst the individual terroir nuances from 24 separately-treated Single Farm Origins brings our most richly textured and generous expression.

Complexity and Creativity

A launch like this deserved suitable accompanying artwork. The Waterford’s stunning label is the handiwork of French artist Nathanaël Koffi – giving rise to its affectionate nickname ‘Cuvée Koffi’.

‘Through layering colors and patterns, I have aimed to capture the multi-dimensional and complex natural flavors of this ultimate Waterford Whisky,’ Nathanaël says. ‘It harnesses everything I love about Waterford Distillery and its whiskies: body, texture and avant-garde methodologies.’

Terroir: traceable and transparent

As with all of our whiskies, every detail of The Waterford – each farm, each cask and the full, remarkable journey from barley to single malt – is available via the pioneering TÉIREoir Code on the back of the bottle.

Free from artificial colouring, additives and chill-filtration and bottled at a robust 50% ABV, this is totally natural single malt – as complex, harmonious and expressive as we can make. We look forward to sharing our new lodestar with curious fans all around the world this Spring.
